Yachats is surrounded by natural beauty encouraging adventure in many forms: hike through redwood forests, beach walks, lighthouse tours, tidepool explorations, kayak trips, sandboard the dunes, stroll through the village shops or just unwind in tranquility.
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
Just south of Yachats stands Cape Perpetua, a temperate rainforest with 26 miles of hiking trails through a beautiful redwood forest. As one of the highest points on the Oregon coast, it offers stunning panoramic ocean views. The West Shelter viewpoint — a stone structure built in the 1930s — provides an ideal location for whale watching.
Heceta Head Lighthouse
Located 14 miles south of Yachats, the Heceta Head Lighthouse shines as the brightest light on the coast and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. Tours are offered Memorial Day through Labor Day, and again during December when the Keepers' House is decorated for its annual Victorian Holiday Open House.
Sea Lions Cave Near the lighthouse, the Sea Lions Cave is the largest sea cave in the world -- the size of a football field and 208 feet below the ground -- and home to hundreds of wild sea lions.
Kayak the Yachats River
See nature up-close with a paddle along the calm current of the Yachats River . Bring your own canoe or kayak, or rent gear in nearby Waldport or Florence . For a more leisurely pace, enjoy the 10-mile scenic route by car and visit the historic North Fork of the Yachats Covered Bridge. Built in 1938 with a Queenpost truss, the bridge is one of the few of its type remaining in Oregon.
Yachats Parks Though a small town, Yachats boasts three state parks: Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site , Yachats State Park, and the Smelt Sands State Recreation Site , where the 804 Walking Trail traverses along rocky cliffs to spill onto an 8-mile stretch of wide, sandy beach.
Sandboard the Oregon Dunes Located only 26 miles to the south, Florence offers abundant recreation opportunities, most notably the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the world's first sandboard park. The dunes stretch 50 miles long and reach 500 feet high. Sandboards are available to rent, along with dune buggy rides and more.
